Petasense Motes use WiFi to send data to the Cloud. There are two options for providing WiFi to the
Motes.

To utilize an existing WiFi network, the network configuration must meet the following
standards:
1. Wireless Protocol (802.11 2.4GHz b/g/n)
Petasense Motes are designed to use 802.11n WiFi operating in the 2.4 GHz band. They are
also compatible with older 2.4GHz 802.11b and 802.11g networks. This is a standard, and
often default, protocol setting.
2. Security Protocol (WEP, WPA or WPA-2)
Petasense Motes currently support WEP, WPA or WPA-2 security protocol. They do not
support networks that present an HTML form for users to enter log-in details to before
accessing the network. Essentially, the network should only require an SSID and password to
permit access to the internet.
Petasense does not currently support enterprise-level WiFi authentication 802.1x, which
requires login with username and password as well as a customary SSID. An end user will
not be able to connect a Mote to their WiFi network in such an environment at this time.

3. Firewall Configuration
Petasense Motes only make outbound connections and do not support inbound
communication. Please ensure that the following network ports are open for outbound
communication:
i) Port 31314 OR Port 993
ii) Port 80 & 443 (typically open by default for all http/https traffic)
Petasense Motes currently support the following security enhancements of your self-provided Access Points (APs):
i) APs programmed with hidden SSID
ii) APs with restricted routing only for the following domain: imp.electricimp.com
iii) APs that white-list devices using MAC IDs or static IP addresses
Alternatively, Petasense can provide WiFi through the use of WiFi Cellular Gateways or
Access Points (APs) for industrial enterprise applications. These APs can be utilized
through one of the following methods:
Petasense recommends 4G/3G Wifi Cellular Gateways from Cradlpeoint. These Gateways
work for both US and International customers. Based on the country and coverage, we use
either 3G/4G backhaul to provide local WiFi. For U.S. customers, Petasense provides Verizon
4G data access. For International customers, you will need to procure a SIM card with local cellular data access.

Petasense can provide a Managed WiFi Access Point that can connect to the local LAN or a
router with access to the internet.
